But the flute from Chris Hein Horns is not assigned. In the VST list for that instrument, it shows it's assigned to Kontakt 5. I suppose it couldn't hurt to uninstall Kontakt 5 and reinstall it with the latest version. I had NOT installed any other version of Kontakt, made no changes to anything at all. I opened my most recent project and got the error I typed in the first post. I was ignorant of what version it was, nor did I think it mattered.

I've used Kontakt 5 many times in projects for the horn software I have. The problem is simple to state - impossible to determine the fix. If I'm literally going to start over, I may as well do it right/better. I suspect there are tutorials on this somewhere. There simply must be a "best practice" way of organizing projects, files, VSTs, VSTi's etc.

So - like I needed to do when I switched machines and could not recover any of my old projects (since the files were scattered in a non-intuitive way and I did not organize things efficiently) I may simple reload Mixcraft and act like I have no previous projects. So many of my projects are of little use anymore. Too much frustration and time needed to get back to where I was. Given what I'm staring at - I have lost all interest in this. Which doesn't make it any less frustrating. So I have to concede that maybe none of this is a Mixcraft issue. And since upgrading the player in effect creates a completely separate additional VST (rather than upgrading the one that's there) it gets worse. Given that certain VSTs only work inside of Kontakt as a player, and given that DAWs load Kontakt and not the software being triggered, it gets pretty confusing in a hurry. Presumably the issue is in mixing up those 2. The one in the project is a version 5, but there is a newer one (standalone) that I have as well. I come to find I now have at least 3 versions of Kontakt on my machine. So it even more of a puzzlement why installing 64bit MX created this error. I don't see it anywhere in its 3rd party DLL / VST folder. It is likely I'm wrong in saying some version of Kontakt comes with Mixcraft. I don't mean to criticize a product I've loved for years - and would still heartily recommend - but this simply should not have happened and to be honest I have very little interest in spending the time it will take to recover all this - given how busy I am with my two jobs and other things. I doubt I even remember which of the several trumpets I used and why. So I'd literally be starting from step 1 - hoping I remember what I set and why. I didn't keep notes on what settings I used because I figured the templates were my notes. Still - it's a LOT of work to get it all back to how I had it. (EDIT - I was wrong the Kontakt 5 version that is there DOES show Chris Hein but it doesn't show the instrument I assigned to that track) But Kontakt 6 (which is now simply called "Kontakt") does.

The version of Kontakt 5 that I get now after this new install doesn't even show Chris Hein Horns.

I fear there is no real solution other than throwing away the work I've done with the horns and starting over. In some sense this may be a Kontakt issue I suppose. I'm very disappointed - I get such little time as it is to use this and I've been set back so far it's made it rather "unfun". I think it's a matter of somehow getting back to the version of Kontakt 5 I was using instead of the one that apparently comes with Mixcraft. I typed "all is not lost" when I meant "all is NOW lost".
